Budget holiday destinations abound in Europe, despite its stereotype as a centre for luxury travel. Beyond the expensive locations in Southern Europe (think Spain, France, and Italy), a plethora of astounding, lesser-known countries are waiting to be discovered.

Many of these places have only recently been opened to tourists, which makes a trip an even more remarkable journey of discovery and unique attractions. So if you’re someone who likes to go ‘off the beaten track’ and visit the places your parents haven’t been, get ready to find out more about these wonderful European delights.

Romania

It is truly amazing that Romania isn’t awash with tourists – but shhhh! Whether you want to see lovely medieval villages, stunning rural landscapes or spectacular ancient castles, this country has it all.

Undoubtedly the lack of tourists only benefits this beautiful place, saving it from the corporate chains that seem to copy and paste throughout most of Europe. The prices are well suited to a budget holiday, with the attractions accessible for only a fraction of the entry fee at any English historical venue. In particular, a visit to the splendid historic town of Sighisoara is highly recommended, which is adorned with beautiful cobblestones and charming cottages.

Valetta, Malta

Budget holiday ideas nearly always benefit from a healthy dose of sunshine. If this sounds like the case for your next trip, the Maltese city of Valetta should be right at the top of your list. The cost of living here is still very affordable, making a stay add up to that most rewarding of sums: good for the heart and bank balance. Valetta is doused almost constantly in the dazzling Mediterranean sun, which lends a warm tone to its ancient streets. The main Cathedral stands proudly near the seashore, surrounded by myriad buildings adorned with paint-peeling shutters. Wandering around this gem of a place island is a fantastic way to spend a relaxing holiday.

Sofia, Bulgaria

Romania’s neighbour gives it a good run for its money in the competition for most beautiful landscapes, that’s for sure. Whilst it is impossible to make the final adjudication between the two when it comes to history, Bulgaria’s capital Sofia might edge ahead. The city has numerous important ruins, which are millenniums old. The capital is also consistently ranked as Europe’s most affordable, making it a bargain to stay for a weekend… or a week.

How to Get There

All of these underappreciated European destinations are easily reachable from any major airport. None of the places takes any longer than a three-hour flight, making them perfect for a budget holiday or just a weekend away. The best way to get your break off to a hassle-free start is to pre-book an airport shuttle for your arrival. Choosing a shared shuttle is a fantastic way to save yet more money, and get there quickly and safely – ready to start the fun!

Which other destinations do you think should have been included in the list?

Whilst it may not have the charm of Barcelona's quirky landmarks, Madrid is certainly not short on style. This lively city plays host to some of Spain's must-see hotels where artistic creativity combines with touches of luxury to provide an unforgettable experience.

Hotel Puerta America is a feat of architectural creativity: some of the industry's most innovative designers were given one floor and carte blanche to do what they liked with it. The result is a mish-mash of genius: from the tomato-hued pvc sheen of Marc Newson's Floor 6 to the spooky curved futurism of Zaha Hadid's Floor 1. The highlight is surely the plasma studio on Floor 4 where mirrors are combined in starkly geometric shapes to create tricks of light and a surreal vibe.

De Las Letras hotel is an elegant and colorful place to rest your head. Ochre colored rooms are adorned with quotes and motifs to create a feeling of cultural richness and historical features merge with cutting-edge modernism for an eclectic, relaxed feel. A well-stocked library caters for the intellectuals this establishment seeks to attract whilst a state of the art fitness center keeps the body as well as the mind in good shape.

For some pure, unadulterated fashion head to ME Madrid. This hotel is flash, snappy, celeb-friendly and the best place for glamour fans to don their highest heels and drink artisan cocktails before hitting the town. Me Madrid is part of a chain of hotels that aim to provide customers with a sexy, high tech experience and has already seen the likes of George Clooney popping up the bar.

Packages for lovers include the 'One-on-One package for two' which consists of a champagne airport pickup, a 'stay-in-bed breakfast' and an intriguingly named 'passion pack'. If all that romance goes to your head you can even come back to ME to tie the knot! Depending on your taste you can choose wedding ceremony themes such as 'the chill', 'the city', 'the passion' or 'the moment'.

Finally, if you want to spend it like Beckham, be sure to book a room at AC Santo Mauro where the man himself ran up a huge bill whilst he was house hunting after his move to Real Madrid. The selling point of this hotel is it's timeless elegance combined with tasteful furnishings and discreet luxury. If you're thinking this couldn't be more opposed to the gaudy luxury of the 'his and hers' thrones at Beckingham palace, you'd be right!

With the holidays looming on the horizon, many travelers are looking for a change of pace and scenery. Now is as good a time as any to plan a vacation to Europe. In fact, those wanting to get away from it all will find a true gem in Madrid, Spain's capital and largest city. With landmarks ranging from the Royal Palace of Madrid to the city's National Library, and such revered museums as the National Archaeological Museum of Spain and Prado Museum, this place truly brims with history and culture.

The city has gained prominence as a major hub for international commerce, making it an ideal place for the business-minded. Nightclubs, theaters, parks and galleries abound, offering something to fit pleasure seekers' unique tastes as well.

A great way to reach the heart of the city is via Paseo de la Castellana, one of Madrid's longest avenues. Various financial buildings and government offices lie along this tree-lined stretch, as does Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, which is slated to host the 2010 Union of Football Associations (UEFA) Champion Leagues Final. After a busy day of work or sightseeing, travelers can call it a night at the nearby Hotel Hesperia Emperatriz, which features rooms decorated in a classic style. Also gracing La Castellana is the posh Hesperia Madrid. Designed by Pascua Ortega, who's also credited with designing the renowned Royal Theater, this 5-star retreat is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World.

Madrid's city center is heralded for its striking architecture, and travelers know a visit to Spain isn't complete without taking pictures of the area's awe-inspiring buildings. Even H10 Villa de la Reina, a 4-star property on Gran Via, sports 20th century architectural details. Hotel El Coloso is also easily accessible, offering a restaurant, social lounges and business area.

Head northeast and you'll reach the district of Salamanca. One of Madrid's wealthiest neighborhoods, it is yet another great place to immerse yourself in history, not to mention shop at fashionable stores and boutiques. Once travelers are ready to put the shopping bags down and unwind, they can stay at the modern Hotel ZenitAbeba. Further, Confortel Suites Madrid is also convenient to Salamanca and lies in close proximity to the M-30 motorway and Juan Carlos I Exhibition Center.

Whether you're a history buff, avid shopper or simply in need of a refreshing alternative to the daily grind, there's no question that Madrid rivals and is included among the world's must-see destinations.
