No matter whether your trip is long or short, it is always tiring when traveling for business. The work of moving through airports, dealing with delays, handing your baggage, finding transportation at your destination city and getting to the meeting is a much greater stress than you ordinarily go through doing business at home. But when you add the problems introduced by jet lag, you face physical distress that can almost feel like you are becoming ill as your body reacts to the long-distance travel.

So it’s a good idea to have some techniques ready to use to prevent jet lag when you are traveling overseas or across several time zones. Yes, you can get jet lag just traveling from the east to west coast domestically. Jet lag comes from the change in time zones and the adjustment your body has to make to deal with the new time cycles in that time zone.

We are not aware of it but our bodies are finely tuned to work at their best in the time zone of our homes. Our biological clocks are tuned to react to the time of day, the daylight and nighttime cycle, environmental factors and the magnetism of the local environment. We have an internal monitor that tells us when we should sleep or be active based on that internal clock.

When we travel to a new time zone, while our mind finds it peculiar that it is a new time of day that is out of sync with what we know, our bodies go through quite a dramatic adjustment to adjust to the new environment. That is why in a new time zone, you may not be able to sleep when it is 11 p.m. where you are, because to your body, it may be the middle of the afternoon or the next morning.

The symptoms of jet lag are fatigue, lack of appetite, shortness of temper and even a feeling of mild nausea that comes from an internal system that has been thrown for a loop. So the best cure for jet lag is good preparation so you can ease into the change of location without too much anxiety. By reducing the effects of jet lag before they even happen, you make the potential that your business meetings will go well much more likely.

  •  Start adjusting in advance. If you can put yourself on the time frame of your destination a few days in advance, the jet lag won’t be as severe. Start adjusting your sleep times and when you take your meals even before the trip begins so you are already “living in that time zone” before you even make the trip.

  •  Keep a clean diet. Jet lag experts advise that you simplify your diet significantly for several days before the trip. Begin to reduce the amount of heavy foods, carbohydrates, sugars and fats in your diet and increase the level of fruits, vegetables and juices you consume. This will make your system more nimble and able to adjust to change.

  •  Give yourself time on the other end. Try to make arrangements to arrive a day before your meetings so you have time in your hotel room to rest and prepare for the business objectives to be achieved.

  •  Eliminate physical stress sources. During a stressful time, try to cut down on physical stresses such as drinking or extreme physical exercise so your body has more reserves to handle the jet lag symptoms.

In the western spans of Serbia, we travelled through the Valjevo gulch(canyon) like we were its first settlers, gradually and to a hush just broken by the streaming of the river which we would break with our steps as we traversed. A steam train transported us through the rippling green woods that began in Mokra Gora and spread past the mountain tops on the steam-fuelled tracks of the Sargan Eight Railway. An evening, flanked by an eminent and glorious sun, was spent after the delicate flow of the strong Dunabe River from the little shorelines of Novi Sad to a narrow point that appeared like the serene end of its overwhelming course. On another, our little pontoon conquered the many twists of the 10-kilometer long Uvac River, embraced by the mountainous plateau.

Nature of Serbia

The back and forth movements of Serbia don't just originate from its social change since troubled time. A nation that is 75% bumpy! What I mean is Mountain! It is scattered with rolling green, secured nature parks, ravines, rivers, and lakes. I spent seven days investigating nearly the full extent of the nation west of its Capital, Belgrade - from the coastline of Novi Sad to the valleys of Valjevo, the wilderness of Gostoljublje to mountainous Zlatibor and the breadth of Tara National Park to the gigantic, snaking Uvac Gorge.

On the off chance that there is one thing that Serbia isn't really known for, it's a plenitude of untouched and unfamiliar nature. Traveling through Serbia is to move with the natural setting that has been presented to it, to be dynamic to explore its multi-layers and exceptional landscape.

For when you strip away a mind-boggling society and governmental issues, the magnificence of the landscape and nature in Serbia is the one thing here that has not ever changed and neither will be.

Trekking The Gradac River, Valjevo 

The Gradac River goes through what I said to be some of Serbia's ideal and untouched scenery. Steep slants, high rock developments, and precipice faces encase a shallow river that curves through the timberlands and meadows of this secured region in shades of white and silver. Its streaming waters were our waymarkers as we trekked through the towns of Valjevo that lay covered up in this bumpy landscape - a 50km-long said to represent to a natural outskirt of northwest Serbia towards the south. Wild Serbia, an experience tour organization set up by local people from this very zone, takes you into the very heart of the area - deep into the Canyon, through its forest, and knee-deep into the frigid icy crisp waters flanked by twisting trees and mud tracks!

Winding The Uvac Gorge

We landed on a street that bended around the edges of the high cliff faces, and the main sighting was of a swing that just called for us to leave dead speechless and take in the view. It was the flight of flexibility after entering the Uvac Gorge in southwestern Serbia, and keeping in mind that 10,000-foot view can catch the eminent curves of this river. Even this scene was sufficient to catch the feeling of the numerous wild and free landscapes in this nation.

Inching down a manmade soil incline, we came straightforwardly to the riverfront where we could hire a boat and driver. Pontoon trips are the must-do here, where you feel as though you've been gobbled up by all the clichés of a marvelous natural scene, gliding through the gorge of the River Uvac yet feeling as though you have never observed anything like its color of reflected blues and greens never before. Truly, you haven't!

Drifting on The Danube 

Obviously, the greatest river that slices through Serbia is the Danube - a relentless spread that slices through 10 nations, from Germany and Austria in the west to the Balkan plain (and in the long run Ukraine). Europe's second-biggest river and its wide banks and endless appearance are tempting to explore.

From the sandy banks that line Serbia's second greatest city of Novi Sad, we delicately skimmed down towards a little sandy hill, likened to a mysterious island, before bouncing in kayaks and paddling to the most tranquil corners. Riding The Sargan Eight Railway

An eager train nerd's fantasy, the steam's emerald green shell sits inside a setting likened to stepping back in time. Maybe to the late 1900's, the point at which it initially ran its chugging, steaming course through restricted gages from Sarajevo to Belgrade - a connection that shut in 1974.

Now you can bounce on board at the town of Mokra Gora and take in the barcode tag of tree trunks in a shuddering of green as you trundle through the Sargan pass that was remade in the mid-2000's.

A place where there is diverse landscape, it is Serbia's natural treasures untouched by the contention that give it another new lease of life, and additionally hope for the local people to show a wonderful side to the nation that we once in a while, if at all, hear about.

A major tourist destination, Kanchanaburi has a truly magnificent landscape with waterfalls, forests, rivers and caves dating back to the times of Neolithic man. It's the ultimate outdoor adventure park with all sorts of activities available from rafting, canoeing and fishing to golfing, mountain biking and bird watching. There are even treks into the dense jungle in search of elephants for those of you who like a little more adventure in your life. Koh Phi Phi Don

Mysterious, ancient, exotic, mystic: all of these are words used to describe Morocco. They are all true, but Morocco is also fresh, new, evolving, and modern. But the only way to form your own opinion about Morocco is to actually go there.

The European Influence

Morocco has been open to European travellers for almost a century, so it is one of the most tourist-friendly countries in North Africa. Compared to its neighbors, Morocco is also a safe and stable country to visit even though its leader is a king with autocratic power. But any casual visitor will be fine just as long as you don't snap pictures of the royal palace.

Being in such close contact with Europeans for so long, the culture of Morocco has adopted many traits and customs that will make European and American travellers feel right at home, up to a point. Examples: western toilets are common, and you can easily find those that speak English, French, or Spanish. On the other hand, things can be a little behind the times by European/American standards.

Notably: Women would be well advised to dress conservatively, this doesn't mean you need to wear a full body burka. Female travellers should be prepared to experience unwanted attention regardless of what they are wearing. Also, it is a good idea to avoid direct eye contact with males on the street. This will minimize the situation.

Be Wary of Your Hosts

Getting into Morocco from Europe by RyanAir's is convenient and usually inexpensive. Most of these flights tend to fly into Marrakesh and leave from Fez. While travelling (and even when not), keep your valuables close to you and do not pack anything important or of value into checked bags as theft is common in Moroccan airports.

There are many options for sleeping in the ultra low-budget, ultra high-budget and ultra everything in between. Many of the hostels or "hotels" you find may seem very sketchy and some have bad reputations, so the safest bet is to stick with choices that are acknowledged by known travel books or respectable websites. It is essential to do research before arrival.

It is unfortunate that scams and cons are widespread throughout the country. Be wary of overly helpful strangers who may offer help and guide you straight into their friend's shop. At the very worst, if you do fall into one of these traps, you'll just end up spending a little more money than you would have liked on that new carpet.

Pick pocketing is also another serious, irritating problem, so a healthy skepticism and guarded vigilance are the best protection you can have. I always use a hidden money belt.

Shoppers Heaven: The Mystery Begins

The best thing about Morocco is that it is very exotic, and very inexpensive. A dollar, euro, or pound will go a long way here.

Just About Anything You Want: This may seem like an odd thing to say, but in Morocco you can do just about anything you want as long as you are willing to pay for it. You will find that just about anything you see will be for sale or ready for your use, if the price is right. With so few restrictions and limitations, it is really up to the traveller to be responsible and cautious, and look out for your own safety and to make the right decisions.

Learn to Bargain: While we are speaking of spending money, it is important to remember to always bargain and not to be afraid to play hardball in doing so. These people negotiate and make deals constantly and they are good at it. This system may seem fun at first but it can quickly become quite tiresome, as can the constant barrage of sales pitches you will face every time you step outside of your hostel.

Outdoor Market Heaven: The reason bargaining is something you will face every day is because Morocco has some of the most exciting, labyrinthine outdoor markets in the world. You can purchase any variety of beautiful ornament, knick-knack, trinket, carpet, or clothing or any other item of varying degrees of legality. Carpets and spices are the two hottest items for most visitors shopping in the legal spectrum, and rightly so. The colors and aromas you will find from these two items will make you feel like you are in a gourmet kitchen run by Dr. Seuss; I mean this in the best possible sense.

You could easily spend your entire trip shopping in these mazes of merchandise but there is so much more to see outside of the shopping tents.

The Cities of Morocco: Each city in Morocco has a different feel to it but each one gives a different sense of what Morocco has in store. You can experience the seaside feel of the country on the west coast in Casablanca or Rabat. You can get a more iconic and trademark adventure in the markets and streets of Marrakesh. Fez has more of an urban, city sprawl that can feel much more dangerous but will show you what a city in North Africa is really like.

The Sahara: A trip out to the brink of the Sahara in Merzouga will let you feel what it's like living amongst the Berber people as you sleep in tents under intensely starry skies and take camel rides through the desert dunes that turn your scalp orange with sand for days.

Coming to a town like Merzouga should really be a primary reason for visiting this country. If not to experience what people are like in this part of the world so completely different from our own, but coming out to this eastern region will show you natural beauty almost alien to what we in the Western World have experienced nature to be.

Delicious Delicacies

Morocco's culinary palette is best known for two things: couscous and mint tea. Anywhere you order it, the couscous you will be served will be cooked to perfection and is guaranteed to satisfy you.

Mint tea is something you will probably will never get tired of even though the locals will serve it to you every chance they can get. Each city has its own slight variation on tea mixture, so mint tea is always worth having.

Since food prices are so low here, it's best to try several dishes as often as you can. Tajine is always a delicious treat and order any dish that has cinnamon on it whenever you see it, you will not be let down.

It should be said that what constitutes "fresh" meat in Morocco is far different how our stomachs might define it, so discretion should be used. The same goes for their meaning of "fresh" water. Use caution.


Country of Extremes

Morocco can give you the best of things and it can also give you the worst of things. Between the spice shops and the wretched tanneries, you will smell some of the best and worst odors you will ever inhale. Between the openness of a midnight stroll through the Sahara and the too-small seats on the cross-country bus to get you to your next destination, you will feel some of the best and worst comforts a human can experience. This is just the nature of Morocco.
